What To Do When Over-The-Counter Heartburn Meds Aren’t Enough

When heartburn pops up, most of us head for the drugstore to pick up some antacid tablets or other over-the-counter medication. That usually does the trick pretty quickly, and we go on about our business.
Sometimes, though, that quick fix isn’t enough. So when is it time to bypass the drugstore and head for the doctor’s office?
If symptoms have lasted for several days, or are getting worse, then it’s time to go see your health care provider. That’s also the case if taking over-the-counter medications results in dizziness, chest tightness, fatigue or other symptoms that could indicate something more serious, like a heart attack.
It’s also worth noting that medication, whether it’s prescribed or not, often isn’t enough. If you’re one of the 15 million Americans who are suffering from heartburn every day, then look at your lifestyle and see what might need some tinkering with there as well. Everything from cutting back on spicy foods to getting more exercise should be on the table. In the end, if the antacids aren’t working, consult with your physician to see if you need stronger medications or if there are drug-free ways to get relief. Either way, you’ll be back on track to a pain-free life in short order.
